Read Job Ads Thoroughly Before You Apply!

I have had dreams of making this blog more fun to read with a more relaxed tone and more frequent updates. However, I am honestly too busy running the business. So, I went on a mission to find a freelance blogger. I decided that by hiring a blogger, I can keep my focus on my clients AND I can improve my blog.

Recently, I went to my friend Deb at FreelanceWritingGigs and put an ad out to find a good freelance blogger. Many of the responses I have received are good, but some of them make me scratch my head and wonder if they read the job ad at all.

Here is a response I received. I *think* it was supposed to be a cover letter.

“Hi, I saw your ad in craigslist and I am interested in providing content. I can send samples of my writing.”

Really? Because I didn’t advertise on Craigslist.

Furthermore, I’m glad you are *able* to send samples of your writing. The ad specifically stated, “Please send your resume, cover letter, writing samples, or whatever you feel is necessary for me to make an informed decision.” So why didn’t you?

This is what employers deal with every day. Many jobseekers rush to apply for a position with a copy and paste response that isn’t even appropriate.

If you are a jobseeker, you can increase your chances for an interview if you include a well-thought cover letter. Simply put, it is good business etiquette and it will make you stand out over the other candidates that didn’t even try.

If you need assistance with your cover letter, resume, follow-up letters, or any other documents related to your job search, e-mail me. It could be the difference between getting the interview offer and getting the cold shoulder.
